Food price and India

Indian planners are talking about moving away from the old idea of giving special concessions and subsidies to the small farmers, even as the Global Food Index brings to the fore India’s appalling state of nutrition.

India is vulnerable to food price shocks, according to the Global Food Security Index 2012 released in New Delhi last week. India’s high vulnerability to food price shocks is explained as being due to a high incidence of poverty and food expenditure, in relation to other outlays.

The Global Food Security Index (GFSI) conducted by the Economicst Intelligence Unit (EIU) and commissioned by American chemical company DuPont, ranks 105 countries in accordance to their relative level of food security in three internationally established categories -- affordability, availability and quality and safety. This study ranks India 66th, much below its neighbour China which has been placed at the 38th position.

Even as the study attributes India’s high political stability as the primary driver of its first place rank in food availability within South Asia, the lack of a diverse diet and low protein quality constrain India’s score in food quality and safety, placing it at the third spot among the five countries in the region.

India is behind Pakistan and Sri Lanka in terms of protein intake, according to the report that makes no mention of the vegetarian food-culture of the Hindu-dominated country where a large section of people do not eat meats. Besides, poverty makes these diets unaffordable.

EIU’s regional Director, Pratiba Thaker put it like this: “India’s food is starch-based.” Explaining India’s ranking, Thaker said that India’s moderate global ranking means it has some strengths, yet it also has some areas that it needs to work on, like the infrastructure and storage facilities to help the produce reach the markets on time, which in turn will ensure good money for the farmers.

We are the loser

Dear editor,

I am a diehard fan of football and like most of people of capital I was enjoying Tadar Tang trophy. While it makes me very very proud that the standard of game and talent of players have increased to multiple level since our childhood. But  two things which pricks me is why our CM, Ministers, Legislators and other VIPs need to crowd the stadium every day ? It’s alright they are fan too but when entire state is sinking under floodwater, people dying in tragedy and ration shortage are being highlighted everyday in media do they really have time and morality to enjoy the game, that too coming in their posh, headlighted Fortuners bought in spite severe fund crisis? Every afternoon your motorcade create serpentine traffic jam till late evening. I am sorry but your Fortuners bring misfortune to us.

Second prick is our foul mouthed, ever menacing and most non sporting audience, which keeps on shouting, Maaro, Kaato, Paun tur dega, Bahar mein dekh lega and all Maa- Behen things as if they do not have Maa & Behen. I have seen opponent teams shaking hands & exchanging warm regards after match. Its only audience who raise the temperature of game be it girls, boys, grown ups even women all needs to be put tape on their mouth. When you behave like animal you will be treated like one. This Tadar Tang trophy whoever be winner, loser is our audience.

Yours’

Ramesh Jomo,

Itanagar.

Why not hunger strike instead of bandh ?

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to draw the attention of the people of Arunachal as well as the associations, unions  and other parties who declare bandh and strikes now and then.

Bandh  and strikes does not only hamper the life of people but it slows down the economic growth of a particular area. The major and the immediate sufferers of bandh  and strikes are the business men and the students. It can be seen that government officials generally enjoy the bandh and strikes while general public become the immediate sufferer.

Bandh is democratically correct if it is based on genuine reason. At the same time, it is morally wrong as the bandh generally cripples life of ordinary citizens who are not party to it.

Therefore,  I would like to question the  unions  and  associations, why they do not go for hunger strike  instead bandh if their demands are really genuine. When there are many other options in hand to register protest and express grievances,  whey they choose to call bandh ?
